With over 50,000 thatched properties in the UK, it is not surprising that fires occur, but mercifully in small numbers. However any fire is a tragedy. On average fire destroys 50 thatched buildings every year.

There may be various reasons for this increase. The increasing number of solid fuel burners in use is a major contributing factor. A woodburner / multi fuel stove can generate flue gas temperatures in excess of 600 degrees, this in turn can be transferred through the brickwork of the chimney to the thatch. The Thatch Alert System is designed to detect these high rises in temperature and acts as an early warning device alerting the property owner of these increases before the temperature becomes critical.

It then provides

• An alarm sound when the temperature reaches 170 degrees.
• If it sounds you need to dampen down the fire
• The alarm sounds every 5 minutes until the temperature drops
• If the problem persists then extinguish the fire
• The alarm will continue to check the situation
• If the temperature stays constant then contact the fire service.
