Peter Butcher of Master Thatchers Ipswich has just completed the roofs on a series of unique architect designed houses on a development built by Copthorne Homes at New Hall Farm near Harlow in Essex. These are definitely not traditional thatched houses but they show that thatch, if used with imagination, can be a viable and versatile modern building material.

The roofs are thatched in water reed and laying Thatch Firewall underneath the thatch has provided an hours fire barrier. The addition of lead ridges has done away with the need for reridging and as a result they should remain virtually maintenance free for the life of the thatch.

Thatching Advisory Services thatchers have, over the lifetime of the company, been involved with a number of prestigeous thatching projects throughout the world. The most famous of these must be the Globe theatre on the south bank of the Thames.

The Globe theatre, the first public building to be thatched in London since 1666. The roof is thatched in norfolk reed with a flush sedge wrapover ridge. The reed was treated with TAS fire retardants to enable its construction.

In the past Thatching Advisory services have thatched two roofs at the ideal home exhibition, this year we added our third. The roof took four days to thatch, quite a feat bearing in mind that under normal circumstances it would have taken at least four weeks!

Work abroad has included the thatching in a reconstruction of an African village in the Bronx, New York and roofs at the Jamestown Museum Virginia.

Closer to home large roofs on churches and office conversions have also been undertaken.
