There is always the threat of fire affecting a thatched roof and because of this Thatching Advisory Services Ltd. has, over the years, developed and sold products that can reduce this risk in both existing roofs and on new build thatch. The use of these products can also, in some cases, allow the thatching of a new extension that would normally not gain permision from building control.

TAS Thatchsayf is an environmentally safe and effective fire retardant coating for the fire protection of thatch roofs. On exposure to heat, the fire retardant forms a protective char that restricts oxygen flow to the surface and reduces the surface temperature of the coated base

TAS Thatchsayf is a water-based solution of fire-retardant and intumescent chemicals in a polymer emulsion binder formulated for the protection of thatch roofing. This combination provides dual protection with the fire retardant chemicals penetrating the leaves of the thatch and the intumescent, as well as some of the fire retardant chemicals, forming a thin protective film on the surface of the thatch stems

TAS Thatchsayf does not change the natural appearance of the thatch and improves compaction without hindering its ability to breathe. TAS Thatchsayf also retards bacterial and fungal growth. In order to minimise water penetration it is crucial that roof slopes are 45 degrees

The main constituents of TAS Thatchsayf consist of fertiliser type chemicals, i.e. phosphates and nitrogen compounds, and as such are environmentally friendly, however, high concentrations, such as may be reached in the run-off water after the first rain, may cause damage to vegetation in the drip-off area depending on the amount of rain and thus the dilution

Thatch firewall developed jointly between Rentokil and TAS Ltd was manufactured to specifications as recommended by Building Control.

This product provides one hour fire barrier (B.S. 476: Part 3 2004) Classification EXT.S.AC. Fixed between the thatch and roof construction. In the event of a thatch fire, the thatch is sacrificial and untreated.

Application

Thatch Firewall is laid horizontally across the rafters, similar to roofing felt with a 50mm/75mm overlap. Thatch Firewall can be either stapled or nailed to rafters. Then counter batten over the rafters with 25mm x 50mm to allow for airflow. Finally fix first batten 5" from arris rail followed by 12 inch centres thereafter.

Benefits

1 hour fire barrier (B.S. 476. Part 3 2004)
Easy application

Introduction

Thatchbatts are non-combustible high quality resin bonded lightweight Rockwool slabs, designed to provide fire protection to the underside of thatched roofs on new buildings and/or extensions to existing buildings. They will also provide thermal and acoustic insulation.

Application

Thatchbatts are fitted between the rafters, supported from galvanised steel brackets as illustrated.

The fixing sequence is as follows:

  1. Ensure correct sized bracket is selected, i.e. for 400 or 600mm centre rafters.
  2. Secure the brackets to the rafters with galvanised nails at 300mm centres, starting 150mm from the eaves. Ensure 150mm dimension is also maintained at the ridge, if exceeded fit an additional bracket.
  3. Starting at the eaves, make a mitre cut in the first batt for wall plate/soffit and install the first layer of Thatchbatts, ensuring a good fit between the rafters. A mitre cut should also be made in the batt at the ridge. Part batts, e.g. 300-600mm length, should be supported on at least two brackets.
  4. Install the second layer of Thatchbatts. Horizontal joints must be staggered with the first layer.
  5. Secure the second layer of aluminium foil over the Thatchbatts with a minimum 50mm lap on the horizontal joints.
  6. Secure battens over rafters for thatch as standard instruction.

    Standards and Approvals

  1. During a fire demonstration carried out on two identically constructed thatched roofs (one insulated with two layers of Thatchbatt, one without), the insulated house provided up to 1 hour fire protection to the underside of the thatch. An official report on the test has been prepared by the Loss Prevention Council, ref. CC10647, a copy is available on request.
  2. The installation of 100mm of Thatchbatts with a standard 300mm thatched roof significantly improve the thermal (U value) of the roof and will meet the requirements of the new 1990 Building Regulations.
  3. Dispensations to the 12 metre rule regarding new build thatch, and extensions to existing thatch, have been obtained using Thatchbatts.

Dimensions

1200 x 400 x 50 mm (400crs Rafters)
14 pieces per pack (6.72m2 at 100mm thickness)

Supply

Thatchbatts are available exclusively through the Thatching Advisory Services Limited or through Master Thatchers (its network of franchise thatchers distributed throughout the UK). A list of franchisees is available on request.

The galvanised support brackets and aluminium foil are also available through the same suppliers.

Handling and Storage

Thatchbatts are very light, and easy to cut to any shape with a sharp knife. They are compression wrapped in polythene for short term protection. For long term protection they should be stored indoors or under waterproof covering.
